Product Princess Journal / Business Systems
Do Not Add a New Product Just Because You’re Bored.
A new idea can feel productive. Sometimes it is just a distraction wearing a crown.
Product people love new ideas.
We see possibilities everywhere.
A new version.
A new colour.
A new accessory.
A new collection.
A new spin on something we already make.
And because creating is fun, the new idea usually feels much more exciting than doing the less glamorous work on the product already sitting in front of us.
Improving the product page.
Fixing the photography.
Following up with customers.
Figuring out why conversion is weak.
Cleaning up inventory.
Tightening the offer.
Building repeat sales.
That work is not always exciting.
So the brain says:
“You know what would be fun? Another product.”
😂
New does not automatically mean better.
Sometimes a new product is exactly what the business needs.
But sometimes it is a way of avoiding the harder question:
Have I actually done everything I can with the product I already have?
That question is less exciting.
But usually more profitable.
Because a product that already has customers, feedback, reviews, and proven demand is often worth more attention than an idea that still needs to be developed from scratch.
Finish the job before you chase the next spark.
Before adding something new, ask:
Have I improved the current product as much as I reasonably can?
Is the messaging clear?
Is the photography strong?
Is the price right?
Is the product page doing its job?
Do customers understand the value?
Have I tested bundles?
Have I asked for reviews?
Have I reached the right audience?
Have I followed up with previous customers?
Have I explored wholesale or corporate opportunities?
If the answer is no to half of those things, the next opportunity may already be sitting in your business.
It just looks less shiny.
New products cost more than you think.
A new product is not only the cost of making the item.
It is:
Development.
Samples.
Materials.
Packaging.
Photography.
Website work.
Inventory.
Storage.
Descriptions.
Marketing.
Education.
Testing.
Customer questions.
And sometimes entirely new systems.
That is a lot of energy.
So before you add another SKU, make sure the existing one has actually had a fair chance.
Boredom is not a strategy.
This is probably the part I need to hear myself. 😂
Entrepreneurs get bored long before customers do.
We see the same product every day.
We have talked about it a hundred times.
We have photographed it.
Packed it.
Posted it.
Explained it.
And eventually we start thinking:
“Everyone must be tired of this.”
They are probably not.
Most of your audience has barely seen it.
Some are seeing it for the first time today.
Do not confuse your familiarity with customer fatigue.
Go deeper before you go wider.
Instead of asking:
“What can I make next?”
Try asking:
“How can I make this product more successful?”
That might mean:
A better offer.
Better photography.
A stronger story.
A clearer product page.
A bundle.
A gifting angle.
A corporate version.
Wholesale.
A different audience.
Better packaging.
A second use case.
That is still creativity.
It is just creativity applied to growth instead of novelty.
Let your best products earn more.
A strong product should be allowed to become important.
It should be allowed to become known.
It should be allowed to become your hero product.
Founders sometimes move on too quickly.
We launch something, give it a few weeks, get distracted, and then introduce the next thing.
But brands are often built by repetition.
The same product.
Presented well.
Again and again.
Until the market finally knows what you are known for.
The Product Princess takeaway
Have the idea.
Write it down.
Save the note.
Put it in the “maybe later” folder.
You do not have to kill your creativity.
Just stop letting every new idea become an immediate assignment.
Before you make another product, ask:
Is this truly the next opportunity?
Or:
Am I bored with the work required to grow what I already have?
Because sometimes the smartest move is not creating something new.
It is finally giving the current product the attention it deserves.
New ideas are fun. Profitable focus is better. 👑
