Great Brands Aren’t Built by Accident.
Sometimes the best lessons in branding happen when you aren't looking for them.
Yesterday, on our way home from Montana, I stopped at a little shop in Eureka called Montana Farmacy Co.
And I haven't stopped thinking about it.
It wasn't because they had amazing tea.
Or beautiful shelves.
Or antique furniture.
It was because every single detail belonged.
The building.
The wallpaper.
The old bank vault.
The typography.
The displays.
The products.
Nothing felt accidental.
And as someone who spends a ridiculous amount of time studying products and brands, those are the businesses that fascinate me.
Because branding isn't your logo.
Your logo is part of your brand.
Branding is the feeling someone gets when they encounter your business. It's the packaging they pick up. The words they read. The photographs they see. The way your product is displayed. The experience of opening the box.
And, in this case, it was an entire physical space that felt like stepping inside the brand.
They didn't just sell products. They created a world.
That's what stayed with me.
You knew what Montana Farmacy Co. was without someone having to explain it to you.
Everything was telling the same story.
And THAT is something I think product entrepreneurs can learn from.
We can get so focused on making the product that we treat everything surrounding it as decoration.
The packaging gets figured out later.
The photography gets thrown together.
The website doesn't quite match the Instagram.
The display doesn't quite match the price point.
Individually, those things might seem small.
Together, they're your brand.
The strongest brands understand that the customer is experiencing all of it.
The goal isn't just to be purchased. It's to be remembered.
I left that little shop in Eureka and was still thinking about it the next day.
To me, that's one of the greatest compliments you can give a brand.
And there's another part of this story I love.
I shared my thoughts about Montana Farmacy Co. on Product Princess, and they responded:
“I am literally sitting here in tears. This means the world to us.”
That reminded me that behind the beautiful branding, displays and products are people who have made hundreds of thoughtful little decisions to create them.
Great brands rarely happen because of one brilliant decision.
They're built one thoughtful decision at a time.
THE PRODUCT POINT 👑
Look at your brand as a whole, not just your product.
Does your photography belong with your packaging?
Does your website belong with your product?
Does your messaging belong with your price point?
Does the experience you're creating feel intentional from beginning to end?
Because your customer may come for the product.
But the world you build around it is what they remember 👑
